BRITNEY VISITS SUMMIT!
Summit Hospital and The Britney Spears Foundation teamed up to host The Rally Against Cancer, a cancer
screening and awareness fair, on Sunday, March 2, 2003 at the hospital in Baton Rouge. The event was successful in promoting cancer awareness and the need for early detection screenings as an important prevention tool.
Britney Spears, along with her parents, brother Bryan and sister Jamie Lynn, attended the event to lend their support to this worthy endeavor. Unfortunately, cancer has affected the Spears family personally. Cancer prevention and early detection are issues that the Spears family is very passionate about. The goal of the event was to emphasize the importance of screenings as a way to detect and help cure this disease.
At the event, Summit Hospital medical professionals and the American Cancer Society representatives were onsite to answer questions and address concerns about cancer. Attendees received colon-screening kits, signed up for prostate screening appointments and registered for drawings for free mammograms.
"Last year, approximately 10,000 people in Louisiana died from cancer," said Robert Elliott, M.D., Ph.D. "Louisiana, and in particular Baton Rouge, have a particularly high rate of cancer when compared to other parts of the country."
"We're very grateful to Britney and her foundation for supporting this event," said Dr. Elliott. "The Spears family has been personally affected by cancer, so they know the importance of early detection screenings in preventing and curing this disease."
